| Frederick William Stevenson was born in Aberdeen, in a granite house which still stands at 36 Spital.
His father was a ship's engineer continually at sea, and Frederick was brought up by his mother and grandmother.
The latter had the reputation of a fearsome lady who would not even allow whistling on a Sunday
"Whaur's that whistling on the Sabbath?". Although he was his father's eldest child, he had an older half-brother, George, by his mother's first marriage. It is said that Fred used to tramp the hills barefoot with a handful of grain as a child. The family moved house at least twice in Aberdeen, from Spital to Hardgate to Huntly St before moving to London when Frederick was about 10. He entered St Mark's College Chelsea, one of the new teacher's training colleges when he was about 20 and remained a teacher for the rest of his life. School records exist up to the age of 30 during which time he taught at Byron St School, Poplar. When he was 29, he married another teacher, Leah JUSTICE, who lived nearby. It is said that his father "cut him off" for marrying Leah, and this may be true since he was not mentioned in his father's will, in which his younger sister Dolly was appointed executor. Frederick and Leah moved first to Manor Park where two sons were born (and twins miscarried), and then to East Ham where they lived until retirement. Their eldest son Ronald, an electrical engineer in the merchant navy, suffered a broken skull when he was attacked in Marseille. He returned home as an invalid and died five years later. Their other son Roderick emigrated to Canada but lost his right hand in an accident and also returned home. After retirement, Frederick and Leah moved to Leigh-on-Sea some time in the 1930s. Fred died of heart failure at the age of 76. He was tall quiet man with a mild Scottish accent. He enjoyed playing cards his wife. He was a man of strong principles, and on one occasion he refused to laugh at a joke about a lunatic with the words: "I never laugh at other people's infirmities. Good morning." |
